Fonuea was a blind woman who was mistreated by her village. She ran away to the safety of Vaitogi village with her daughter, Salofa. The two lived in peace until the cruel chief of their village found them. They sought advice from the wisest elder of the village, on the best way to keep peace.
The advice was to jump from the treacherous cliffs of Vaitogi, and the could live together in peace forever.
They decided to take the leap, and immediately upon hitting the water, they turned into a turtle and a shark. To this day, when the children of the village sing their song, Fonuea and Salofa return to the cliffs in their turtle and shark form.
