The sweet mango is one of the few trees in the Pacific that does not need to be cultivated. It grows wild and fruits steadily.
Growing up in Samoa, we had a giant mango tree in front of our house. It had a lot of fruit, and the canopy covered half of our front yard. Bats slept in the tree during the day, and we had many adventures in the shade of that majestic tree. This painting is an ode to the mango tree that once stood proudly in my village of Lepuapua in front of my childhood home. It is no more, but it will always be remembered.
