Beneath the still waters of ancestral memory, Taema and Tilafaiga drift in a sacred trance. In this peaceful underwater moment, the twin sisters—demigoddesses of Samoan legend—carry with them the divine knowledge of tatau, the ancient art of Polynesian tattooing. Their bodies are weightless, but their purpose is heavy with destiny.
As they swam from Fiti to Savai‘i, they chanted a sacred truth:
“Tatau for women, not for men.”
But somewhere beneath the surface, the chant shifted. And so did history.
This painting captures the stillness before the change—before the ocean flipped their words and the practice of tatau became a rite for men. Here, we remember them as they were: calm, powerful, and filled with purpose.
